BIOLUMINESCENT BAY ENCOUNTER
Island information
BIOLUMINESCENT BAY ENCOUNTER
Duration:
2 hours
Departure:
Evening
Hidden along the Caribbean coast on the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico is one of the most spectacular bioluminescent bays in the world.
Tiny organisms known as dinoflagellates create the mysterious blue-green light. A trip into the bay is a magical and educational experience. Fish flash by in the dark water, the milky way arches overhead, and a swim is almost like floating through stardust.
This amazing experience is operated via a non-polluting electric boat staffed by a knowledgeable and entertaining captain and crew who explain the delicate balance of this rare ecosystem. As an added treat, there will be an opportunity to swim in the bay.
Do not miss this amazing experience, which is suitable and recommended for all ages.
Notes:
Although this adventure has been offered in the past, it may not be available on all voyages. Swimming is optional but highly recommended. Should you plan on it, wear your swimsuit under a cover up; sandals or flip-flops work well for footwear. Access back onto the boat is eased by the availability of a ladder. Though the opportunity to swim in the bay should not be missed, the possibility exists that a jellyfish may sting you, particularly if the water temperature is very warm. While swimming in the bay, a swim belt will be provided and must be worn. Please limit the use of insect repellant if you plan on swimming. There are not a lot of mosquitoes and DEET is toxic to the dinoflagellates.
The trip on the bay operates onboard a US Coast Guard certified pontoon boat equipped with an electric motor. Seating is available on the pontoon boat but there are no changing facilities, showers or restrooms onboard.
The trip will operate in case of light to moderate rain. The boat is not covered but as almost every visitor ends up swimming in the bay, rain should not deter you from participating. Local buses will provide the short transportation to and from the pier. These are not air-conditioned and not overly comfortable as you travel over a dirt road. However, the bus journey is limited to only about 10 minutes each way. With advance notice, persons requiring the assistance of a wheelchair can be accommodated. A minimum number of participants are required to operate this adventure.
Participation on this adventure is strictly limited so early reservations are strongly recommended. Bring a towel and a bottle of water.
A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. This program is booked onboard only so please make your reservations as soon as possible after boarding to avoid disappointment. All land adventures in the SeaDream Yachting Land Adventures program are subject to change. The price is subject to increase based on the exchange rate between the local currencies to the US Dollar. Not all of the land adventures shown will be offered on all voyages and departure times are subject to change. Final pricing and departures times will be published onboard. Prices do not include gratuities for local shore excursion guides, drivers, and related service staff. Independent, subcontracted ground operator companies employ all ground staff and these entities do not participate in SeaDream Land Adventures on board "no tipping" practice. Tipping of guides, drivers and other independent ground staff is at the individual guest's discretion, anticipated and appreciated.

On most visits to this island, SeaDream is planning an evening stop at this tiny community along Vieques south coast. It is the ideal gateway to explore the amazing bioluminescent bay only a short distance to the east of town.
The SeaDream tender will bring you right to the center of this small village. From the pier you can take a walk along the waterfront promenade or visit a handful of little shops. There are also a couple of bars and pleasant restaurants all within walking distance.
There will be time for a stroll in this laid-back Caribbean community but do not miss the opportunity to sign up for the visit to the amazing “Bio-Bay!”
