Duration: 3.5 hours
Departure: Announced Onboard

During your visit to Syracuse, we hope you will seize the opportunity and make the time to explore the unique Baroque town of Noto. This visit is also recommended for those that wish to get a bit of exercise and enjoy “Walking through History.” as the visit of Noto is done entirly on foot (about 90 minutes). You will return in time for lunch onboard SeaDream, after which there is still ample time to allow you the afternoon to explore Syracuse on your own.

Located in a region populated with olive and almond trees, Noto is located a distance of about 22 miles/35 kms from Syracuse. During this scenic drive, your local guide will provide you with an insight into the history of Sicily, Syracuse and Noto while passing through the villages of Cassibile and Avola, the “homeland” of Sicilian almonds.

The original town of Noto was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693; but rebuilt according to the town planning and architectural theories of the 18th Century. Built on terraces, the various parts of town are connected by steps and your walking tour includes the Public Gardens, the 18th century Cathedral, currently under restoration after damage suffered during the 1990 earthquake, and some of the other impressive buildings such as the Churches of St. Domenico and of St. Charles (del Colleggio), the “Ducezio” Palace and “Villadorata” Palace.

Following this “Walk through History,” return to Syracuse for a brief introduction of the old town before a well- deserved lunch onboard your SeaDream yacht.

Duration: 4 hours
Departure: Announced Onboard

Are you looking to spend an interesting morning in the company of your fellow SeaDreamers ashore? We hope you will join us on this morning land adventure full of contrasts.

Start your morning with a brief introduction of the town followed by a very interesting visit to the Catacombs of San Giovanni (4th Century AD). This well-known and interesting site features a maze of passages and tunnels with thousands of tombs and the occasional fresco depicting Christian symbols. These tombs differ from the Roman tombs found elsewhere in Italy due to their larger size and the complex tunnel system developed around the tomb of St. Marcian, one of the early Christian martyrs. Following the visit to the catacombs, having exercised your feet a bit, it is only a short drive to the “Hands On” segment of your morning land adventure for a visit to an active wine farm belonging to Baron Pietro Beneventano del Bosco. In order to maintain his estate, this local aristocrat has opened his farm to visitors. In addition to the vineyard he now also operates a small and charming Inn. Your free to explore the surroundings but don’t stray too far as you are then invited to use your hands and delve into a rich sampling of typical homemade Sicilian specialties including the tasting of four wines – a white, a red, a rose and a dessert wine. Most of the time, the Baron manages to be on site during our visit and will be open to questions; there is no need to polish up your Italian, he speaks very good English.

After the sampling of local delicacies in the countryside, return to the town of Syracuse, where, fortified by these snacks, you may wish to remain in town for independent explorations.
