Back to List of Tours    The Essential Salvador Discovery - A UNESCO Heritage Site (Voyage 1707 only)
Duration: 4 hours
Departure: Afternoon

Discover the many faces of Salvador da Bahia during your afternoon visit and explore the city’s intriguing cultural mix of African and European heritage. During this visit you will experience the historic part as well as the modern section and even the Bahian subway, as contrast between the new and the old.

From your SeaDream yacht transfer directly the to Municipal Square, where you can see the Lacerda's Elevator, one of the cities landmarks, that links the upper and lower city. Here you can also enjoy an overview of Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). This is also where we start our walk through the Historical Centre, arriving at "Terreiro de Jesus Square", to visit two of Salvador's most important churches.

Facing Terreiro de Jesus Square is the Baroque Cathedral (please note that the cathedral is closed Sunday afternoon). At the end of the recently renovated square stands the Church of São Francisco. The opulent interior features cedar woodcarvings, covered in gold leaf that took 28 years to complete. Also note the beautiful white and blue tiled walls and the spectacular painted ceiling.

Next it is off to the Pelourinho District, one of the oldest areas in town. Stroll through its narrow cobbled streets lined with old buildings that now house art galleries, jewellery and souvenir shops. The “Largo do Pelourinho” is a colonial square and pillory, where slaves and prisoners were punished in full view of the approving gentry.

Back onboard your air-conditioned vehicle, pass by the Dique do Tororó, where you can see the "Orixás Sculptures” by the Bahian artist Tati Moreno. At the conclusion of your visit, there will be a brief stop in the Barra district, the location of the "Farol da Barra" (Lighthouse) at the fortress of San Antonio, built to protect the Portuguese colonists from Dutch invaders. Thereafter, return to your SeaDream yacht where refreshing beverages await you.

Notes:
The day of our visit falls on the Sunday after Carnival and we expect many structures, stages, etc. used during the Carnival will still be set up, making it difficult for the vehicles to pass through some of the streets. However, São Francisco church will be opened in the afternoon. The above-described afternoon visit of Salvador has been adapted to accommodate the local circumstances on this specific date.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes as this adventure includes a walk through the old town.

Back to List of Tours    The Very Best of Salvador - A UNESCO Heritage Site (voyage 1645 only)
Duration: 4 hours
Departure: Morning

We hope that you join us on a visit of this uniquely interesting city. Discover the many faces of Salvador de Bahia, with its intriguing cultural mix of African and European heritage. Your local guide will bring history alive, thus providing you with a more complete understanding of this historically important city.

From your SeaDream yacht, proceed directly to Municipal Square, where you find the Lacerda's Elevator, a city landmark, linking the upper and lower city. From here, also enjoy an excellent view of Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). We have also included a special visit to the "Portal da Misericórdia Museum", featuring a collection of historic Salvadorian furniture, silverware, porcelain, paintings, etc. Crossing the street, enter the Pierre Vergér Gallery where you can view many interesting photos displaying Bahian culture and people.

Then it is off to begin a walking tour through the Historical Center, a colorful area that is home to some of Brazil's most well preserved colonial architecture. The Pelourinho District is one of the oldest areas in town; stroll through its narrow cobbled streets lined with old buildings which now house art galleries, jewelry and souvenir shops. The "Largo do Pelourinho" is a colonial square and pillory, where slaves and prisoners were punished in full view of the approving gentry.

At "Terreiro de Jesus Square", visit two of Salvador's most important churches. Facing Terreiro de Jesus Square is the Baroque Cathedral, formerly the chapel of the largest Jesuit seminary outside Rome. The plain exterior masks one of the most beautiful churches in the city. The stunning interior includes a paneled ceiling of carved and glided wood which gives the church a light airy feel, contrasting sharply to the overwrought Rococo altar and side chapels. At the end of the square stands the opulent São Francisco Church. Its interior is adorned with stunning cedar woodcarvings, and contains so much gold leaf that it took 28 years to complete. Also note the beautiful white and blue tiled walls and the spectacular painted ceiling. Back onboard your air-conditioned vehicle, pass by the Dique do Tororó, where you can see the "Orixás Sculptures” by the Bahian artist Tati Moreno.

Soon reach the Solar do Unhão, originally the home of Brazilian pioneer Gabriel Soares and a rare architectural gem that precedes the founding of Salvador as the capital of Brazil in 1549. Soares was clearly an influential citizen of early Salvador, and much of what is known today about early colonial Brazil is due to Soares' articles published in a Portuguese newspaper in the 1570s. There is a fascinating history to this lovely old house that your guide shares with you today. The first and second floors house Salvador's Museum of Modern Art (MAM). Although the museum is closed this morning, walking along the terraced garden is a pleasure and offers magnificent views of the Bay, surrounding islands, and downtown Salvador. Following this visit, return to your SeaDream yacht where a delicious lunch and refreshing beverages await you.
