Port Name Description
Sulina (Danube Delta) Sulina is the largest town in the Danube delta, first documented in AD950, with about 50% of the delta's population living here. The rather sleepy little town is poised on the literal edge of Europe and the busiest branch of the Danube shipping channel. A newly cobble-stoned riverside promenade looks impressive, but step just one street back from the promenade and old Sulina is still there in all its dusty glory. Sulina is well located for tours into the Danube Delta. The Delta is listed as a UNESCO Reservation of the Biosphere because of its variety of ecosystems (more than 25 types of natural ecosystems). It is considered to be the third in ecological significance among the 300 reserves of the world with over 1,200 varieties of plants, 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes. This is the place where millions of birds from many different parts of the world come to lay their eggs.
Odessa Know as Ukraine's most sociable city, Odessa has a reputation for sunshine and fun as a former Soviet holiday resort. The Russians wrested the port from the Turks as late as 1789. Appointed as governor, the French Duke de Richelieu set about building a well-laid out city in the prevailing French and Italian styles. The Potemkin Steps (featured in the cult film "The Battleship Potemkin") connect the harbour to the city. The Opera and Ballet Theatre, City Hall and grand mansions, including one that belonged to the Tolstoy family, lie along tree-shaded and cobble-stoned streets.
Yalta With its backdrop of mountain peaks and warm and sunny summers, Yalta became a fashionable health resort in the 19th century. Tsar Nicholas II and other Russian aristocrats brought their families here to recuperate from tuberculosis. Palaces for aristocrats, villas and hotels began to emerge. In nearby Livadia, the Tsar's family had a magnificent summer residence built. This was where Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin gathered for the Yalta Conference in 1945 that would divide up Europe after the Second World War. Close by is the Swallow's Nest, that iconic Yalta photo you'll see on all the postcards -- a fairytale castle on a cliff-top, built as a folly in 1912 by a love-struck baron for his ballerina mistress. Today, the broad palm-lined seafront promenade and the pebbly beaches are enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. Our SeaDream yacht docks a stones-throw from the city center.
Sochi Sochi, on the Russian Black Sea coast, is the country's biggest and busiest summer sea resort, attracting more than 4 million visitors annually with its beautiful mountainous coastline, endless shingle beaches, warm sunny days, and bustling nightlife. Joseph Stalin had his dacha here and Sochi is also the Russian President's traditional summer residence. Strangely, only 3 percent of Sochi's visitors are international travellers. Another paradox is that the city, always associated in the national mentality with palms and a warm climate, won the bid to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics. The alpine resort of Krasnaya Polyana, high in the mountains 30 miles from Sochi, will be the center of the event. This has set in motion a frenzy of construction which will vastly improve the infrastructure in the area. Note: SeaDream guests do not require a Russian visitors visa if participating in pre-arranged tours programs.
Novorossiysk Novorossiysk is the main Russian port on the Black Sea coast. In addition to the industrial shipping, a major naval base for the Black Sea fleet is under construction. This is an industrial town with five large cement plants, steel and other industries. On the lighter side, it is also one of the main winemaking areas of Russia !! In this area, the tide of German invasion during WWII was turned. A small contingent of Russian troops held out for eight months, denying the port to the Germans. This "very Russian" city is full of memorials to its war heroes. Leonid Brezynev, Soviet leader until 1982, participated in this campaign. At the Myskhako winery outside the city, the enterprising owner has preserved Brezynev's dugout from the war.
Sevastopol This fine natural harbour has been the base of the Russian Black Sea fleet since the 1920s. It remained a "closed city" until the late 1990s when the military security was finally relaxed. The Russians have kept the city "shipshape" and it is one of the most well-tended cities of the former Soviet Union. Now part of the Ukraine, the government has recently extended the lease for the fleet for another 25 years. An interesting relic of the "cold war" is the former Soviet nuclear submarine base at nearby Balaclava. Now a museum, it looks like it came straight out of a James Bond movie. The Crimean War was fought around the city in the 1850s when Florence Nightingale tended the British wounded from the ill-fated "Charge of the Light Brigade". The battle around the city is brought to spectacular life in a gigantic 360-degree painting and life-size model at the Panorama Museum.
Nessebar Located on a small peninsula in the Black Sea linked with the land by a narrow isthmus, the town has existed for more than 9,000 years. It emerged as a fortified Thracian settlement; afterwards it was a Greek polis, then a Roman colony. The largest number of buildings date from 11th to 14th centuries, most of them churches in the so-called "picturesque" style: walls intersected by pilasters and lunettes, with stone, brick and ceramic ornaments and arches along the cornice. The oldest one is the Old Metropolitan church from the 5th century AD. Today the old part of the town has regained its original romantic atmosphere: narrow cobblestone lanes, tiny squares, two-storied period houses with stone-built ground levels and wooden upper floors jutting above the streets and external staircases, gift shops, pubs, taverns and lovely flower gardens.

Novorossiysk

Novorossiysk - Battles & Bottles(of Wine)

We will start our tour of Novorossiysk right on the pier where our yacht is docked. On the same pier is docked the museum ship, the Russian navy cruiser "Mikhail Kutuzov", named after the army general who is credited for saving Russia from Napoleon. Nowadays this former battleship houses the Black Sea Navy Museum. We will visit the decks of the battleship and learn about it's history. Nearby a wide promenade along the sea-front is a popular place for the locals and visitors. Here there are also several impressive monuments to military heros and city founders where we will make a photo stop. We will then board our motorcoach for a panoramic drive of the city. The cityscape has changed in recent years with the addition of many new high-rise buildings of offices and apartments. Our next stop is at the legendary Malaya Zemlya ("Little Land") memorial museum. It is devoted to the dramatic landing operation by Soviet Naval infantry, which took place 10-16 September, 1943. The land surrounding the memorial has be preserved as it was after the battles, covered with shell-holes and with trenches. Close to the old battlefields lies the winery "Myskhako", our next stop. In Soviet times, Myskhako wines were reserved solely for the Communist Party elite, largely thanks to the fact that one-time General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev fought in the area during the war. His wartime dugout has been found on the vineyard and can be visited. In the mid-nineties the former state farm, including the vineyards and production facilities, was privatised. The enterprising new management are actively developing the brand and produce a range of both red and white wines that have done well in competitions. Out in the vinyard we will learn more about the wine industry as an expert explains the wine-making process. We can sample the results at on open-air terrace in the vinyards where we will have the opportunity to taste both a European style wine and a wine made in good old Soviet style with extra long barrel aging in Caucasian oak. Wines can be purchased at the winery before our bus returns us to the dock.

Notes IMPORTANT NOTE: A Russian tourist visa is not required if participating in SeaDream Land Adventures. Your tour ticket acts as a visa. Highlights Of Odessa

This tour gives a general introduction to Odessa and its main attractions. The historic center is set on orderly tree-lined streets. Elegant buildings display a mixture of different styles, a definite French architectural influence with a Russian flavor. We depart from the pier by motorcoach which takes us up to the impressive square of Catherine the Great and the popular seaside promenade called Primorsky Boulevard. From here we can view the famous Potemkin Steps. The monument at the top is to the Frenchman, Duc de Richelieu, governor of Odessa in the early 1800's. The steps were featured in the most recognizable scene from the cult movie "Battleship Potemkin". We stroll down to the eastern end of the boulevard to view the monument to the poet Pushkin, who spent his exile in Odessa. Just opposite is the imposing colonnaded Odessa City Hall and a cannon salvaged from the British frigate Tiger during the Crimean War. Passing the Maritime and the Archaeological Museums, we come to the most famous building in the city, the Opera and Ballet Theater built in 1884 and with Italian Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo influences. Rejoining the motorcoach we will drive to the City Garden where we will have refreshments in one of the local restaurants. Next we walk through the heart of the city along Deribasovskaya Street to Sobornaya Square and the St.Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Cathedral, recently rebuilt in its original appearance after Stalin had it blown up in 1930's.. Today it is the biggest and the richest church in Odessa. Here we will have time to browse at the handicraft market located on the square and visit the Passazh, a lavishly ornate shopping mall and hotel built in 1899, which boasts rows of baroque sculptures. Our final stop will be at the palace of Count Pototsky, which houses the Odessa Fine Arts Museum. It's maze of rooms include treasures such as 15th century icons to modern works. Odessa Catacombs

Your SeaDream Land Adventure will take you outside the city and give you an interesting perspective on Odessa’s war history. You will visit the labyrinth of catacombs and the Museum of Partisan Glory located in Nerubaiskoye village. The Odessa catacombs were formed when the foundations of the city was laid. The sandstone was quarried out resulting in an intricate labyrinth of underground corridors. In total they run for over 2,500 miles (4,023 km) under Odessa and its surroundings. During their history, they have provided refuge for smugglers, revolutionaries and partisans. They served their key role during 2.5 year-long German occupation of the city in World War II when they became a command post of the resistance. The network of tunnels we will visit in Nerubaiskoye village are about 500 yards (457 meters) long and have been turned into the Museum of Partisan Glory. Beginning from the pier, your drive will take you into the countryside past small farms, orchards and vineyards to the village of Nerubaiskoye originally built as a Cossack fortress. On arrival you will have a guided visit where you will see the restored resistance headquarters, workshops, hospital, kitchen, and other facilities used by the partisans. Outside again, you will visit the museum, founded in the post-war years to commemorate the heroic deeds of the partisans and city defenders. It displays pictures of the partisans, and many artefacts from the time of city occupation. Return to Odessa to continue your unique land adventure at Shevchenko Park. In the park you will walk along Alley of Glory to view the Unknown Sailor Memorial and the eternal flame to those who fell, defending Odessa - the hero-city during the World War II. This was your final stop of your SeaDream Land Adventure. Walk back to your coach and drive back to the pier and your mega yacht.

Sevastopol

"cold War" Secrets Exposed

You start with a short walk to Prymorsky Boulevard. Walk along the Boulevard to the Monument to Scuttled Ships and learn its history. During your short stroll you will also see sea-front and Nakhimov Squares. Then proceed to the Grafskaya Quay and board your boat for an adventure along the harbors of Sevastopol before the visit to the brand new museum of Sevastopol. 'Heroic Sevastopol' - is the name of the first thematic exhibition of Ukraine's Naval Museum that was recently opened on the north side of Sevastopol within the premises of a unique historical building - the Mikhailovsky coastal casemated battery which was erected in 1843-1845. The joint project of Ukraine's National Military History Museum and Sheremetiev's Museum, the outstanding exhibition offers an unprecedented range of historical events and displays an impressive number of original exhibits. Once you set your foot in the Museum, you can't help plunging into the atmosphere of bygone days. The Mikhailovsky battery served as a defensive stronghold during the Crimean war and survived the stormy and tempestuous times of revolutions, civil wars and Sevastopol's second defense. It feels like the very walls in the Museum could start talking to tell you tragic and heroic tales of the Past. The Museum halls comprise former artillery casemates built under the reign of Nikolas I and lately carefully restored. One casemate boasts the powerful garrison gun the so called two-stone 'unicorn' on a high gun carriage with a rotating frame, thoroughly reproduced according to the drawings of the 19th century. Precisely the same gun was placed on this very spot 160 years ago. The replicated heating furnaces of the mid-19th century are situated alongside the whole suite. Sevastopol's heroic history dating from the City foundation up to now is splendidly mirrored in original lithographs and photos, paintings, arms and weapons, uniforms, awards, documents and many other exhibits presented in 23 halls of the Museum. A set of installations reproduces historical events that took place in the battery within the 19th and 20th centuries, whereas audio and video clips serve to enhance the impression. Visiting the 'Heroic Sevastopol' exhibition helps us see, feel and grasp more than 200 years of Sevastopol heroic military history. After the Mikhailovsky Battery visit have a boat ride back to Grafskaya Quay to come back to your yacht.

We come first to the large Nakhimov square with it's monument to the Crimean War admiral and hero. From there we cross Primorsky Park and walk along the seaside promenade to see the famous Monument to Scuttled Ships out in the waters of the bay, which has become the symbol of Sevastopol. From here we board our coach to visit the ancient Greek city of Chersonesus, founded in 422BC. Many ancient civilizations have left their mark in this area. We will be guided through the ruins of the ancient town to explore the remains of the antique theater which is unique in the Ukraine, an area of defensive walls, the network of the old streets, elegant basilica columns made of Proconess marble and fragments of intricate mosaics "evidences of the culture and art that flourished here thousands of years ago. This place played an important role in both Crimean and Russian history. It was here that Prince Vladimir was christened in 988AD, founding the Russian Orthodox Church. We conclude our walk with a visit to the majestic Cathedral in Commemoration of St. Vladimir's Christening built by Emperor Alexander II, and recently restored to it's former glory. After our exploration of the Chersonesus we drive to our next highlight, the Panorama Museum. Panorama is an historical museum, which was opened in 1905 on the 50-th anniversary of the defense of Sevastopol in the Crimean War. The museum houses a magnificent (115 meters long, 14 meters high) 360 degree canvas by the famous Russian battle artist F. Roubaud, and is the best example of the national art of panoramic painting. The picture depicts the first main assault of Sevastopol on the 18th of June 1855. The circular canvas merges into the 900 sq. m. relief model. We stand on the observation platform in the middle of the hall, as if we are at the top of Malakhov Hill during one of the fiercest and decisive battles of the Crimean war. After our visit to the Panorama we will have some free time to browse the souvenirs stalls next to the museum. Here your tour comes to an end and we return to dockside.

Sulina (Danube Delta)

Exploring The Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is perhaps the least inhabited region of temperate Europe with a population density of about 3 inhabitants per square mile. Little Sulina with its 4,600 inhabitants is the local metropolis and we will take a short walking tour of the town. The Lighthouse is the famous historical monument of the area, however, it is now far from the sea. At the end of the walking tour we will visit Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church and learn a little of this predominant religion in Romania. Your Land Adventure by boat in the Danube Delta begins from the pier at Sulina. Along small canals, you can admire the wildness and the unique fauna of the Delta. The Danube Delta is the youngest land in Europe (it grows larger by 40 yards of land every year). A low alluvial plain, mostly covered by wetlands and water, it consists of an intricate pattern of marshes, channels, streamlets and lakes. The average altitude is 0.52 m, with 20% of the territory below sea level. The sand dunes on the coast are the highest point of the delta. It is one of the largest and most compact reed areas in the world (almost 1,000 square miles), a place with the richest ornithological fauna in the world (over 250 species), a combination of natural and man-made ecosystems. Also in the delta there are islands of old forests with subtropical species of vegetation rare for this part of the world. In this natural paradise you can see a large variety of bird species, such as pelicans, heron, swan, and wild duck. The fauna of this water is very rich in fish like carp, plaice, codfish, perch, pike, and sander. A snack will be served onboard the excursion boat. We will sail through the secondary canals on the way back to the city of Sulina and your SeaDream Yacht.

The gold domes are newly restored and the façade of the cathedral is remarkable for the mosaic picture of the ancient Russian Prince Alexander Nevsky – a Russian saint. We will also see the interiors of the cathedral. A further drive along the picturesque coast takes you to the Livadia Palace stopping at an observation platform along the way for a photo stop of the Swallow’s Nest castle, perched on its cliff-top.
