| Hamburg | Although Hamburg may be Germany's second largest city, it still seems to have retained it's provincial charm and laid-back atmosphere. It is a city on water. The immense Alster lake intrudes right into the city center and the locals sail and canoe here year-round. The Elbe river, which rises far to the south near Prague, dissects the city before proceeding another 60 miles down to the North Sea. Always a major port, Hamburg was a "free city" and had a well-earned reputation for it's Sankt Pauli red-light district centered on the wide main street called Reeperbahn. Despite it's reputation, the Sankt Pauli area has widespread popularity with locals for it's theatre musicals. |

| Stockholm | Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden. Founded circa 1250, Stockholm has long been one of Sweden's cultural, media, political, and economic centres. Stockholm is known for its beauty, its buildings and architecture, its abundant clean and open water, and its many parks. It is sometimes referred to as Venice of the North. |
| Bornholm | This Danish island lies at the entrance to the Baltic Sea, about 95 miles southeast of Copenhagen. The southern tip of Sweden is actually much closer; about 20 miles away. Just 30 miles long and 20 miles wide, Bornholm packs a surprising amount of geological variety into a small rectangular area. The north coast has cliffs and rift valleys, while the south coast has white sand beaches and sand dunes. Farms, forests, and a handful of towns occupy the middle of the island, which is criss-crossed by more than 130 miles of bike and pedestrian paths. We love the north coast of the island and we therefore plan to anchor off the charming little village of Gudhjem. This picturesque village has two small harbours once filled with fishing boats and now occupied by pleasure craft. Our tender takes us right into the center of the village. The old fish smokehouses remain and the narrow streets are lined with cafes, artist's workshops and well-kept half-timbered houses. A beautifully restored windmill towers over the town. |
| Visby, Gotland | Visby is a locality and the seat of Gotland Municipality. It is the only one with historical city status on the island of Gotland; it is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the most notable historical remains are the 3.4 km long stone wall called Ringmuren ("the Ring Wall"), that encircles the city and the old church ruins. |
| Kuressaare, Saaremaa | Kuressaare (population 15,000) is the only town on the island of Saaremaa - the biggest island of Estonia. The island has retained a uniqueness due to it's isolation. After the Russians occupied the island at the end of WWII, Saaremaa was declared a restricted zone, closed to foreigners and to most mainland Estonians. It remained a restricted area until 1989. After your voyage you are likely to be the only one on your block, or even in your city, who has visited Kuressaare!! In the villages there are still stone fences and houses with thatched roofs and windmills. The island has had a chequered history. It has been occupied by the Germans, the Danes, the Swedes. Russia under the Tsars and, most recently, Russia under the Soviets. Kuressaare (up to 1917 it was known as Arensburg) has a unique castle dating from the 13th century and is known for its beautiful and well preserved old town. Try the sourdough bread and home-brewed beer for which the town is renowned. |
| Tallinn | Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. The main attractions are in the two old towns (Lower Town and Toompea) which are both easily explored on foot. Eastern districts around Pirita and Kadriorg are also worth visiting and the Estonian Open Air Museum in Rocca al Mare, west of the city, preserves aspects of Estonian rural culture and architecture. |
| Mariehamn, Aaland Islands | Mariehamn is on the island group of Aaland, a group of about 6,500 islands scattered in the Baltic Sea, half way between the Finnish and Swedish mainlands. The independent Aalanders have an autonomous status as part of Finland, although 96% voted to be part of Sweden when Finland become independent in 1917! Mariehamn with it's 11,000 inhabitants, is situated on a narrow peninsula in between two sea bays and the harbours Vasterhamn and Osterhamn. Mariehamn was the base for the last large sailing ship fleet in the world which transported Australian wheat to Europe until after WW2. The four-master "Pommern", now a museum in Mariehamn, is an important part of the town's rich maritime tradition. Our SeaDream yacht will dock directly in front of the "Pommern", and an easy walk from the town center. |
| Helsinki | Helsinki is a pocket-sized city of five hundred thousand and the capital of Finland. Over 450 years of history, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods of occupation can be clearly seen in Helsinki. The Swedes occupied Finland until 1809, when the Russians took over. It was not until 1917 under the Russian Revolution that Finland become independent.. We sail in to Helsinki through an archipelago of tiny islands that surrounds the city. The area is a paradise for boating in the summer months. On the right side is the fortress island of Suomenlinna which has protected the city since 1750. Our SeaDream yacht can dock right in the city at the end of the central boulevard called the Esplanade. Department stores, restaurants, parks - everything is nearby. |
| St. Petersburg | For over three centuries St.Petersburg has been impressing visitors from all over the world. The city is not only an open-air museum, but also an embodiment of three hundred years of the Russian history. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, the ambitious ruler-reformer who dared to build a European capital on bare marshes. St. Petersburg was constructed by brilliant Russian, Italian, and French architects. Beautifully laid out, with canals and broad boulevards, the result is a city that is too European to be Russian, but, still too Russian to be European. Your SeaDream yacht will dock on the banks of the Neva river, just a few hundred yards from the city center and a great starting point for our land adventures. |
| Kiel Canal (transit) | The transit of the Kiel Canal is fascinating. The canal links the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, a 61-mile journey at the south end of Denmark's Jutland peninsula. Sailing east, we enter the canal at Brunsbuttel at the mouth of the Elbe river. The canal joins the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. Many modern cruise ships are too large to transit the canal, but it is no problem for our SeaDream yachts. The canal is the busiest artificial seaway in the world with about 45,000 vessels passing through each year....so there is always plenty to watch while having breakfast at the Topside restaurant !! . |

Bike Trails Of North Bornholm
One of the most popular ways of touring Bornholm is by bike. The island has 150 miles of bike trails. So let's get on our bikes and get going! Our guide will show us the highlights of this great cycling area. We will pick up our bikes in the village and follow our guide out of town through undulating countryside until we arrive at the Helligdomsklipper (Sacred Cliffs), not far from town. We will leave our bikes at the Bornholm Art Museum which has won several prizes for it's architecture and walk down to the rocky coastline. Steep slopes with cliffs rising abruptly from the sea to up to 150 feet tower above small half-hidden coves. Your guide will point out to you some of the special sites. Back on our bikes we head through the countryside to the very scenic lake of Graamyr, located in the forest above the village of Gudhjem. Continuing on we soon arrive at the Open Air Museum " Melsted farm. Here we see how people lived in the countryside more than 100 years ago, how their daily lives were and we hear about the local history. You will visit the residential part as well as the stables; see the horse carriages and old farm machinery. On leaving the Open Air Museum, we will ride along the rocky coastline into town, where we will pass the Church of Gudhjem and arrive at the Old Wind Mill " actually the largest of its kind in Denmark, which was built in 1893. It was used for grinding wheat to flour until 1965 " then it was "retired". In 2006 it reopened with a cafe and a shop which promotes locally made goods and agricultural products. During the visit we will be given a small sample of the local products such as jam, biscuits or honey. Leaving the Wind Mill we walk our bikes down a steep street through the center of the village past glass studios, handicrafts stores and cafes as we return to the harbor. After this energetic tour is over you might want to treat yourself to a couple of locally-brewed beers at a harborside pub! (cost not included)

Bornholm Art, Nature And The Knights Templar
The picturesque fishing village of Gudhjem on the rugged North coast of Bornholm has attracted many artists, both Danish and foreign. Many of these artists are exhibited at the Bornholm Art Museum, which is our first stop on this tour by coach of the highlights of the North coast. The Bornholm Art Museum is situated at the top of the Sacred Rocks (Helligdomsklipperne). Many would say that this is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Denmark " and that gives the museum something to live up to. The design of the building connects the indoor with the surrounding landscape and creates the perfect setting for the art, paintings and craftwork. Our next stop is at the Medieval Village which is like stepping 600 years back in time. Houses and farm buildings are reconstructed based on original drawings and a medieval manor house is the centerpiece of the village. Visit the buildings and see how life was back in Medieval Europe. During the visit a show of medieval weapons will be displayed. The Round Churches of Bornholm are unique. The biggest of the four Round Churches in Bornholm, the Oesterlars church, is situated next to the Medieval Center. The churches were built as round towers with a cone shaped wooden roof. Originally they had an open platform, which was used for defensive purposes, so these were fortress churches! Excavations indicate that the Knights Templar were the builders of the round churches. This order of knights created during the Crusades, had a powerful position on this strategic island controlling the entrance to the Baltic. Treasures associated with the Knights Templar have been found on Bornholm. An excavation in 1995 to install heating ducts under the floor of Oesterlars church found ``unusual and unexpected stone features...which might be explained by the presence of an undiscovered crypt". Could this be the hiding place of the Holy Grail? On our way back to Gudhjem we stop to visit the glass blowers, Pete Hunner and his wife Maibritt Johnsson at Baltic Sea Glass. Their workshop is in a lovely setting right on the coastline. With a base in design and production of functional table top glassware, Johnsson and Hunner also concentrate their energy in creating one-of-a-kind works for gallery and museum exhibitions throughout the world. See how they create the glass, take a look at their shop and enjoy the views of the Baltic Sea while enjoying a glass of champagne served in one of their handmade glasses.

The tour will be made with a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) reaching a speed of over 40 knots through the archipelago outside Helsinki. Our adventure begins by tracing a route through channels in Helsinki city and passing the ship- building area to marvel at the huge size of the ships being constructed at the shipyard in the middle of the city. Highlights Of Helsinki
We start the tour with a short walk to the famous Old Market Hall of Helsinki. Old Market Hall opened in 1889 and contains a variety of vendors selling baked goods, meats, cheeses, and even exotic products from Lapland. The outdoor farmer's market fills with rows of small stalls offering fresh produce, local handicrafts, souvenirs, and prepared foods. We will sample a traditional Finnish snack and an equally traditional glass of Finnish schnapps. We then board the coach in Market Square located right next to Market Hall. Our guide is a mine of information about the history and culture of Finland and the Finns, including just why this nation's inhabitants are so crazy about the Sauna. On our tour we will make three stops to see and visit some unique and beautiful sights of central Helsinki, with its impressive wealth of architecture. The most striking is probably Carl Ludvig Engel's neo-classical Senate Square, surrounded by public buildings built in the old center in the mid-19th century. Further on we will pass several sights including the Uspenski Cathedral, the Presidential Palace and the Swedish Theater on Mannerheim Street. After passing the Parliament Building our guide will point out the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma; it's architectural design is credited to the American architect Steven Holl. After seeing a glimpse of the Finlandia Hall (designed by architect Alvar Aalto) we pass the Olympic Stadium, site of the 1952 Olympic Games, and arrive at the famous Temppeliaukion Kirkko (let's just call it "Rock Church"), the church hewn from solid rock with a ceiling faced with copper. Finally we will make a visit to the Sibelius Park to view the magnificent monument in honor of the best-known Finnish composer Jean Sibelius before it's time to return to the dock.

Countryside And Folklore Tour
This tour will give you the opportunity to experience some of the culture and traditions of the Saaremaa island. Depart Roomassaare port for a drive through the island countryside. Along the way we will visit Kihelkonna Church, one of the oldest on the Island and completed in 1260. The church is home for the oldest preserved organ in Estonia built by Johann Andrea Stein in 1805. You will then continue to visit the Mihkli Farm Museum. This small open-air museum is approximately 300 years old and displays the farmsteads typical of Western Saaremaa. Most of the buildings date to the middle of the 18th century. Almost all of the items on display have been made by the six generations of family who lived here. The farm consists of a family dwelling (the log house with no foundation), a threshing barn/dwelling, a "wheel house" where woodwork was carried out and the farm's wheeled wagons were stored, a smithy, a summer kitchen, two stone storage barns and a smoke sauna. A windmill is located a few hundred meters distant. This unique old-time setting goes hand-in-hand with inextinguishable Saaremaan pride. Tour Saaremaa's Tiny Capital City
Saaremaa`s tiny capital Kuressaare has more than 600 years of history. Due to it's isolation and rural setting the town has not suffered industrial pollution and urban sprawl. Much of it's Gothic and classicist architecture has been well preserved. Some of it's must beautiful buildings are the Town Hall and Weigh House. The open-air market place is filled with foodstuff and native handicrafts, including a marvelous selection of Estonian famous hand-made woollen sweaters and mittens. Further down along Lossi Street, there is the Orthodox St. Nicholas Church, built in 1790. In the middle of the 19th century Kuressaare became a health resort. The most charming reminders from those times are Pargi Street and Kurhouse, located in the park in front of the Episcopal Castle. Without doubt, a tour of the capital must include the Episcopal Castle, the best-preserved medieval fortress in the Baltics, which for many centuries combined the role of Episcopal residence, prison and sanctuary. The basic quadrangular structure took 40 years to build between 1340 and 1380 and the massive walls were added in the 15th century.

Shipwrecks And Champagne
When local diver Christian Ekstrom was exploring a shipwreck not far from Mariehamn harbor in July last year he made a remarkable discovery. In the wreck he found champagne bottles from the 1780's which makes them the oldest in the world. The news went worldwide. You may recall having read about it. Meet the divers and hear their exciting story. We will also enjoy a tasting of the champagnes of today from the same vinyards. After quite some detective work, the maker of the corks was traced and through them the it has been established that they come from three different producers; Heidsieck , Veuve Clicquot and Juglar, all world famous for their products. We have organized a private evening onboard the museum tall ship Pommern where you will meet some members of the diving team and hear the story how the bottles were found and what has happened with them since. We have also arranged a champagne tasting with a small Aalandic snack to "wake " up the flavor in these wines.

Nautical Mariehamn - You Be The Captain
Mariehamn is the small capital city of the Aaland Islands, a group of about 6,500 islands scattered in the Baltic Sea. The ocean is all around and the islands naturally developed a rich maritime tradition. Mariehamn was the base for the last large sailing ship fleet in the world which transported Australian wheat to Europe until after World War Two. Many inhabitants still become seafarers and the Aaland University trains students in marine navigation using a life-size simulator of a ship's bridge. You will have the opportunity to stand on the bridge and navigate the ship into the harbour of Mariehamn! Bring your captain's hat. We can also climb the tower of the university building for a fantastic view over the archipelago. Proceeding into the city, we will visit the Salt Culture Center, a handicraft house which is run by several local designers. The workshop includes textile , silver, ceramic, wood and iron goods made here by one of the designers who is probably standing behind the counter. Transfer back to the yacht or continue your day in Mariehamn if time permitting.

Russian Immigration Issues
St.Petersburg is not an easy city to sightsee independently and independent touring requires that you obtain a tourist visa in your home country prior to your travel. However, visitors coming by cruise ship (or yacht in our case) do not require a tourist visa if they are participating in organized tours and their stay is not longer than 72 hours. We have arranged a comprehensive tour program that we feel our guests will enjoy. Our local tour operator will take care of the immigration issues. Personal tour tickets are issued for each tour and this, along with your passport, acts as your landing card. You will be able to pre-purchase the tours to make sure you don't miss any of the sights you have come to see.

Every summer since 1993, the "Stars of the White Nights" music and ballet festival is held. Catherine's Great Palace At Pushkin
Of all the Imperial palaces, none are more evocative of both the heyday and twilight of the Romanovs than those at Pushkin, originally called "Tsarskoye Selo" or "Tsar's Village", 25km south of St. Petersburg. The town is also associated with the great poet, Alexander Pushkin, who studied here at the Lycee; and with Rasputin, a frequent visitor. Pushkin was once a model town, connected to Pavlovsk and St. Petersburg by Russia's first railway line, built for the Imperial family's convenience. Catherine's Palace was built in 1756 in beautiful baroque style by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Its grandiose turquoise, white, and gold facade stretches 978 feet. The palace contains a series of magnificent rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery and the Great Hall. The Amber Room - While many Americans associate amber with the casing for dinosaur DNA in 1993's Jurassic Park, the stone has enthralled Europeans, and especially Russians, for centuries because of the golden, jewel- encrusted Amber Room, which was made of several tons of the gemstone. A gift to Peter the Great in 1716 celebrating peace between Russia and Prussia, the room's fate became anything but peaceful: Nazis looted it during World War II, and in the final months of the war, the amber panels, which had been packed away in crates, disappeared. A replica was completed in 2003, but the contents of the original, dubbed "the Eighth Wonder of the World," have remained missing for decades. The parks of the estate add to the splendour of the palace and several are embellished with a number of charming pavilions.

City On The Water - Neva & Canals
A boat tour on the Neva river and the canals in the historic center of the city is a wonderful introduction to the St.Petersburg. The riverbanks and canals are lined by unbroken graceful facades of palaces, mansions and churches. Our route through the canals will take us around the historic center, passing under the Nevsky Prospekt on the Fontanka canal. When founded 300 years ago by Peter the Great, the marshes were drained by construction of canals which is the reason why the city is sometimes called the "Northern Venice". Peter and Paul Fortress The Peter and Paul fortress is located on a small island in the Neva river. This is a short coach ride from the yacht, past some of St.Petersburg's most famous vistas. Begun in 1703 it was built to secure Russia's hold on the Neva delta as a fortress-cum-prison defended by ramparts and bastions. The magnificent Peter and Paul Cathedral, located on the grounds of the fortress, is still the tallest point in the city and it is the burial place of all Russian Tsars starting with Peter the Great. The remains of the last tsar, Nicolas II and his family, were interred here in 1998, eighty years after their murder. It is undoubtedly a unique Baroque construction, which miraculously survived during the Leningrad siege of WWII. We board our sightseeing boat on the Neva river from the fortress dock. From the Neva, we enter the canals alongside the Summer Gardens. Our boat will take us along canals praised in many classics of Russian literature - Fontanka, Griboedov, Krukov, Moika Canals, passing under ornate bridges. Along the canals we pass the Yusupov Palace and the Mariinsky Theatre. We will leave the boat at the Blue Bridge on the Moika Canal and walk 200 yards to the incredibly ornate St.Isaac's Cathedral, the fourth largest domed cathedral in Europe. St. Isaac's Cathedral One of the world's most beautiful cathedrals, St. Isaac's was built between 1818 and 1858 to Auguste Montferrand's design and named in honor of St. Isaac of Dalmatia on whose day (May 30) Peter the Great was born. The cathedral has columns of Karelian granite and pediments with statues of the Apostles and the Evangelists. It is 101.5 meters high, and there is a marvellous view over St.Petersburg from the colonnades. The interior of the cathedral is as impressive as the exterior: walls and columns lavishly decorated with malachite, lapis lazuli, marble, precious stones and minerals; an enormous stained-glass figure of Christ by the Iconostasis; mosaic images of saints. In fact, an idea of the megalomania of the czars can be gleaned by taking a close look at the saints chosen to be included in the iconostasis. Apart from Jesus and Mary, who were obligatory, all the figures were chosen because their names coincided with a member of the Romanov family. After our guided tour of the cathedral we return by coach the short distance along the embankement to the yacht.

Evening Walk - "white Nights" & "spilled Blood"
Sitting on the 60th parallel of latitude, St.Petersburg is almost as far north as Anchorage, Alaska. During the long summer "White Nights" the city is alive as never at any other time during the year. The Nevsky Prospect, the main avenue, throngs with young and old in their summer best. Our guide will show us how St.Petersburgers live out their summer nights. We will also include a short ride on the metro (subway) system and a quiet evening visit to the remarkable Church on the Spilled Blood. After dinner, we depart from the ship by coach for Vladimirskaya Metro station. The metro stations are decorated in different styles, some very ornate. The long escalators take us deep down into the marble-lined Vladimirskaya station, with it's immense chandeliers and Soviet stars. We take the Metro via Vosstaniya metro station to Nevsky Prospekt and get off at Griboedov Canal station. Here we walk along the canal to the Church on the Spilled Blood for a quiet evening visit. The Church on the Spilled Blood is a fine example of neo-Russian architecture, resembling Russian churches of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is famous not only for its decorative onion domes, but also for its breathtaking interior of enamels and mosaics. Inside, colourful mosaics cover an area of around 7000 square meters of intricate design, thought to be the largest indoor mosaic in the world. The church was constructed in 1883, on the exact spot where the great Tsar-Liberator, Alexander II, was assassinated by revolutionaries in 1881. And so, it was from the spilled blood of Alexander II that the church got its name. After the 1917 revolution the church was turned into storage for theatrical props and only in August of 1997, after 25 years of restoration, was the Church on the Spilled Blood again opened to the public in all its original, extraordinary beauty. We walk back to Nevsky Prospekt along quiet side lanes, peeking into courtyards of old apartment buildings and discovering the charm of the old back streets of St. Petersburg. For a grandstand view of the evening passing parade along the Nevsky Prospekt, we stop for coffee at the "Coffee Company"., located in the House of Books This Art Nouveau treasure is just another building along Nevsky, but worth noting are its glass dome and mystical mosaics. It one belonged to the Singer sewing machine company, whose name is still engraved on the fascade, between the second and third floors. For decades it was Dom Knigi, or House of Books, Leningrad's main bookstore. After renovation, it now houses the bookstore on the first floor and an upscle shopping mall on the higher levels. We will have time for browsing in House of Books or other stores. Our bus will be parked alongside the Kazan Cathedral, just across Nevsky Prospekt, where we will meet for return transfer to the yacht.

Hermitage Storage - Behind The Scenes
The State Hermitage Museum has more than 9 million exhibits. As you can imagine, not all of them on display. For many years, vast quantities of items were stored in the cellars and lofts of the Winter Palace and the other buildings in the Hermitage complex along the banks of the Neva river. The need for better storage and restoration facilities was very pressing. In 1990 a project was commenced to build a modern and functional facility to support the Museum. A complex of buildings with an area of 350,000 square feet was designed and the first part of the facility was opened in 2003. The Staraya Derevnya (Old Village) Restoration and Storage Centre comprises five buildings: a storage facility, a building for exhibitions and public lectures, a restoration facility, an engineering structure and an administrative building. One fascinating feature of the complex is an education area for blind children. By touching and interacting with copies of exhibits they learn about the exhibits of the Museum. The new museum Storage Facility functions according to the principle of "open storage". The tour route open to visitors extends for around one kilometer. Special sliding racks allow for a very accessible display of exhibits. Much of the total collection of the History of Russian Culture department has been moved here, including paintings, sculpture and furniture. The Hall of Carriages is enormous and houses state carriages and sedan-chairs from the time of Catherine the Great. Other collections from the Western European Art, Oriental and Archeology Departments are represented as well as the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Easel Paintings. Many of the items are on display for the first time, including a field tent of cashmere embroidered in gold thread which was presented by Sultan Selim III to Catherine the Great in 1793. The drive to Staraya Derevnya takes about 30 minutes over the Neva and out through the northern suburbs. The guides will have plenty of time to tell about life in modern-day St.Petersburg.

Jewels Of The Tsars - Hermitage Gold & Diamond Treasury
In the Diamond Treasury of the Hermitage, you can see particularly valuable items from the personal property of the Russian Tsars, such as the 46-piece toilet service of Empress Elisabeth made of pure gold or the two magnificent horse blankets and harnesses, one of them adorned with 8,000 brilliants, the other with 16 000 diamonds. You will see further 1083 brilliants and 2458 diamonds in the small copy of the Russian power insignia, made in 1900 by Faberge. Empress Elizabeth purchased many fashionable articles from Europe: English watches, toiletry cases, broaches and hair decorations of gem stones. Catherine the Great opened a "diamond treasury" in the Winter palace. There she kept a great number of medals, watches and chains, snuff-boxes and gold sword hilts. Before the October Revolution there were two famous diamonds in Russia - the Orlov Diamond weighing 194,8 carats mounted into the Catherine's scepter, and the Shah Diamond weighing 88,7 carats presented by the Shah of Iran. They are now on display in the Diamond Fund of Russia. Probably, the most striking object in the Gold Room collection is a horse attire presented to Nicolas I by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire - Mahmud. The saddle cloth is encrusted with more than 16,000 diamonds. One of the last sections of the Gold Room is a collection of works by Carl Faberge and his goldsmiths. The Treasure Gallery, one of the most interesting collections of the museum, got its name in the 18th century during the reign of Catherine the Great. The main idea of the section, which is called the Diamond Rooms, is to show the development of the jeweler's craft over the course of mankind's many centuries of history from the third millennium B.C. to the start of the 20th century

State Hermitage Museum
The Winter Palace is undoubtedly the most famous building of imperial St. Petersburg, not only as the residence of the Tsars and the backdrop for the 1905 and 1917 Revolutions, but also as the home of the Hermitage, the world's largest museum of art. There is no museum in the world that rivals the Hermitage in size and quality. Its collection is so large that it would take years to view it in its entirety. At last count, there were nearly three million works on exhibit. It includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, unique collections of Rembrandt, Rubens, French Impressionists Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Van Gogh, Matisse, Gaugin and sculptures by Rodin. Visitors should also take advantage of its excellent Greek and Roman antiquities collection and its exhibits of Siberian and Central Asian art. Not least among the attractions of the Hermitage is the museum itself, with its fine interior decoration and architectural detail. The origins of the Hermitage can be traced back to the private art collection of Peter the Great, who purchased numerous works during his travels abroad and later hung them in his residence. Catherine the Great expanded the collection considerably, and she and her successors built the Hermitage collection in large part with purchases of the private collections of the Western European aristocracy and monarchy. By the time Nicholas II ascended the throne in 1894, he was heir to the greatest collection of art in Europe. After the Revolution of 1917, the museum was opened to the public, and its collection was further augmented by the addition of modern works taken from private collections. The Peacock Clock is one of the attractions of the Hermitage. It was brought to Russia from France as a gift to Catherine the Great from one of her favorites. In the 18th century this clock was considered a real rarity. The mechanism of the clock is hidden under a mushroom and on top of the mushroom there is a gilded peacock, a rooster and an owl. When the clock is wound up the peacock spreads its tail, the rooster crows and the owl blinks.

The Russian Versailles - Peterhof
One of St. Petersburg's most famous attractions, the palace and park at Peterhof are often referred to as "the Russian Versailles". The park is located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, on the western outskirts of the city. The three monumental cascading fountains in front of the Grand Palace are probably one of the best-know images of St. Petersburg. Peter the Great chose the site early as being the closest to St. Petersburg where the Gulf was deep enough for sea- going vessels. He started by building the charming little summer palace of Monplaisir on the shoreline. A great number of eminent architects, artists, and anonymous folk craftsmen were involved in the further development of the wonderful parks, 176 fountains, majestic palace, and a remarkable collection of sculpture and paintings. Peterhof was intended to become the most splendid official royal summer residence. After 1917 the Peterhof ensemble was taken into state custody and turned into an architecture and art museum. The buildings and grounds were behind German lines during the WWII siege and were heavily damaged. Restoration began immediately after the war and continues to this day. Our visit begins in the elegant Grand Palace, the highlights including the oak study of Peter the Great, the Royal Bed Chamber and the Throne Room. Our route then takes us down through the Lower Gardens to admire the fountains, most famous of which is the golden Samson Fountain. Walking down to the shoreline, we will find our private hydrofoil waiting to take us back to the city through the commercial port and Neva river.

Visit To The Famous Jacobson Ballet School
St. Petersburg is world renowned as one of the major centers for ballet. The first school of ballet was formed in St.Petersburg in the 1740's and Russian ballet has contributed much to modern classical ballet style. Leonid Jacobson, who founded the Askold Marakov Theatre and this school, was widely regarded as one of the best choreographers of the 20th century. His work lives on in his signature dance, the so-called Choreographic Miniatures " ballet vignettes based on short stories by Russian authors such as Chekov. During the Soviet era, ballet schools were state subsidised and ballet was an important part of the international image of the USSR. The Jacobson school now must pay its own way and our visit provides a welcome contribution to the funding of the school. The "behind the scenes" world of a ballet dancer can be interesting and educational, most especially in Russia. On this tour, guests will witness, firsthand, the rarely seen life and times of a Russian ballet troupe rehearsal at one of St. Petersburg's most famous schools for performing arts. Guests will observe dancers perform Jacobson's Exercise 20, the warm-up they complete every day before rehearsals followed by a brief, private ballet presentation. After the presentation, there will be time for coffee and for us to mingle with the dancers and learn more about this fascinating art.
