Belle Ile

Belle Ile & Oyster Tasting

The history of Brittany has always been tightly bound up with the sea It is renowned for its fishing activity, but one should not forget the shellfish culture and moreover the oyster farming. Brittany, which has long been the great production region for flat oysters, has now developed its Portuguese and even Japanese cupped oyster beds. There are considered to be at least a dozen excellent types of Breton oysters. The biggest maturing beds on the Breton Atlantic coast lie between Audierne and Le Croisic, mainly in River d'Etel and River Penerf, Quiberon Bay and The Golf du Morbihan. Off this coastline, in the open sea, stands Belle Ile, "la bien nommee". It is the largest of all Breton islands with a coastline comprising cliffs, creeks and beaches, sloping gently down on the North side while presenting a wild face to the open sea. From Le Palais, the island's little capital, dominated by a citadel built in the mid 16th century, we leave for a short tour of the Island. We first reach Sauzon in the North West; which lies at the entrance to a winding valley. Once a stronghold for pirates, the little fishing port has since attracted many artists for its bright colors and its surrounding landscape. Next Port Goulphar and Port Coton: the stretch of coast surrounding the Grand Phare, the islands' tall lighthouse, is the most spectacular of the whole island. From the fiercely weather-beaten cliffs we discover the Port Coton needles, pyramids of rocks worn and shaped by the ocean. After our discovery of the island we proceed to a restaurant where we can indulge ourselves with an oyster opening and tasting in the fresh sea air (or inside if bad weather). After the opening of your shellfish, you will be invited to sample oysters with a glass of white wine.

A star shaped citadel built in the 16th century on the orders of King Henri II (1519-1559) dominates Le Palais, the island's little capital. It was later enlarged by the Dukes of Gondi and by Fouquet, the double ramparts and powerful corner bastions show Vauban's influence. A perfect expression of classical military architecture, the citadel offers a promenade through the past. Meet Fouquet or the Cardinal of Retz, Louis XIV and the "poison affaire", the Chouans and Cadoudal and many more characters that made the story of this sentinel of the sea. We enter the fortress through the gate (Porte du Bourg) and follow the great Moat (Grand Fosse) carved in rocks to the Keep gate. After a the tour of the Parade ground we discover soldiers quarters, prison cells, gunpowder storage, kitchens, etc... Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust was founded in 1959 by naturalist and author Gerald Durrell (1925-1995). It is a charitable organisation that has been saving endangered species from extinction for nearly fifty years. The Durrell Trust uses hands-on conservation expertise to help endangered species recover and survive in the long-term, working with animals in the wild; in protected environments overseas and at its international headquarters at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey. At Durrell the animals live in an environment that is as close to what their natural environment would be if they lived in the wild. There is a vast variety of animals you can see from the Agile Frog to the Mauritius Pink Pigeon to the Western Lowland Gorilla and even the Andean Bear! Upon your arrival at the park, we will be met by our guide who will walk with us around the Wildlife Park and talk through the work the Trust undertakes and the animals that are housed on the site.

During this less active but no less scenic adventure option, discover the island's scenic northern and central parts. Following this enjoyable morning visit, you have the afternoon to explore the charming town of San Sebastian on your own. Leaving the pier, make your way to the North of the island until you reach the islands "Visitor Center." During your drive, there will be several stops to appreciate the stunning scenery. The visitor center is well worth a visit, offering you the opportunity to learn about the island including its unique fauna and flora. So spectacular and unique is the forest that it was declared a national park in 1981 and UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1986. From this viewpoint you can enjoy a wonderful vista of the Valle Gran Rey; try not to take a picture. While at the restaurant, you will be treated to a delicious local snack " tapas! While enjoying your tapas, sit back and be astonished by a 5 to 10 minute presentation of El Silbo, a traditional language (!) based on whistling that was used on the island for communication prior to the arrival of telephones, roads and cars. The language almost came close to extinction but, apparently, it is now taught in school and used by a growing number of locals for any number of occasions; though we have been told by reliable sources that it is not used when flirting. Why not give it a try yourself " whistling of course. Fortified by the delicious tapas, your return drive will provide you with further amazing views of the fantastic landscape of La Gomera.

Santander

Bilbao & The Guggenheim Museum

Bilbao, the industrial and financial capital of the Basque Country, is situated between two ranges of hills on both sides of the River Nervion. The iron ore mines near the city were discovered by the Romans, who paved the way for the numerous foundries later built on both banks of the river. Today, the city is undergoing a spectacular transformation. In the quarter of Abandoibarra, we find the famous Guggenheim Museum designed by North American architect Frank O. Gehry. This love-it-or-hate-it architectural environment represents some of the most groundbreaking architecture to have come out of the 20th century. We will explore the impressive permanent and temporary exhibits on a guided visit inside and outside of the museum, followed by some free time for our own exploring. On leaving the Museum, we take a short drive down to the Old Quarter located on the right bank of the river Nervion, an area which has undergone huge reconstruction following a devastating flood in 1983 and where many of the streets are now pedestrian. Here we will view the 14th-century Gothic cathedral, the Arriaga Theatre, the Plaza Nueva and the Bilbao Ria, which separates the old and the new city. In Basque cities, it is typical for the locals to make an entire lunch or dinner out of the surprising and delicious miniature cuisine known as "pintxos' (Basque equivalent for "tapas"), a dining experience like no other. The Basque pintxos are reputed to be the best in Spain, with a wide variety from traditional grilled wild mushrooms, stuffed spicy peppers, cured ham or more avant-garde creations. We will lunch in a traditional restaurant on the local "tapas" complimented by local wines. After lunch there will be a little free time to browse and shop at your leisure in the Old Quarter among chic boutiques, perfume stores and cafes before our return to the yacht in Santander.

Santander & Spain's Most Charming Village

The first part of our tour will take us to Santillana del Mar, situated 25 miles from Santander. Strangely enough, it is not "del Mar" but several miles inland. It must be one of the most interesting villages in Spain from an architectural and historical point of view. It's one of the most beautifully preserved and easy to walk and admire. The fortified house of Borja, the House of the Eagle, Merinos Tower and the College-church with its cloister, all this make Santillana one of the most charming villages in the whole country. If you know of a more charming one, we would love to hear about it ! Once the walking tour has finished, we will have some drinks and snacks at the village's Parador (state historic hotel). Returning to Santander we will enjoy a panoramic tour of this beautiful town, passing the Gothic Cathedral, Magdalena Palace, Beach of el Sardinero and the magnificent building of the Bank of Santander. The city owes its existence to the excellent harbour of the Bay of Santander. Santander was an important port for Castile in the later Middle Ages, and also for trade with the New World. It officially became a city in 1755.

Notes Note: Guests must be able to walk even paved and cobblestone surfaces. Low heeled, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. St. Malo

Classical Mont Saint Michel

Departing by bus from Saint Malo, proudly named the "Privateers' City", we are taken directly to the MONT SAINT MICHEL which "is to the ocean what the Pyramid of Cheops is to the desert"..."We must protect- by any means this masterpiece of the nature and the art." as Victor Hugo put it. We first discover the "Mont" surrounded by the bay, a fragile and natural setting of fauna and flora. We then walk through the narrow streets of the medieval village up to the Abbey. Once inside there will be a guided tour of the abbey which is an amazing achievement of passionate builders. Originated by a dream, the monastery was founded by the 10th century while the "Merveille" (the "Marvel") was constructed during the period 1203-1228 as one of the most imposing achievements of Gothic architecture. Today the Mont welcomes us as modern pilgrims following the century-old tradition. Time at leisure will be allowed for independent sightseeing and shopping. After our visit we drive back to Saint Malo and our yacht docked right under the city walls.

"privateers' Lair" - Saint Malo On Foot

We meet our guide pier side and commence a discovery of the charms of the old city of St. Malo. As we stroll around the quaint narrow streets, our knowledgeable guide points out sites of historical interest. Saint-Malo became notorious as the home of the corsairs, French privateers and sometimes pirates. Their ships were safe in the well-defended harbour. We view the castle, part of the ramparts protecting the town, the town's typical streets, the house of Duchess Ann, and the cathedral. We will also become acquainted with some of the more famous personalities of St. Malo both famous and infamous, such as Jacques Cartier, Duguay-Trouin, Surcouf, and the well-known romantic writer ChU•teaubriand. Vigo (Bayona), Galicia

Bayona - Sights & Tastes Of Galicia

Bayona (also spelled Baiona) is a beautifully situated little port town which is now a popular seaside resort. It is also a fishing village which has managed to maintain its ancient appearance, with its medieval old quarter of narrow streets and stone building. In addition to its excellent beaches and old quarter, Bayona has a magnificent 16th century fortress overlooking the town which has been converted into a 4 star Parador. Bayona claimed its place in history when it became the first place in the Old World to learn of the discovery of America from one of Columbus' returning caravels, La Pinta, which anchored in the tiny bay on April 1st, 1493. Starting from Vigo, our bus will take us up Monte Castro for a view of the city and habour before proceeding to Bayona. In Bayona our tour will start with a guided walking tour of the old quarter and some time to browse on our own. We will then be quided up the walls of the Monte Real castle to the Parador where will have the opportunity taste local wines of Galicia accompanied by the local variety of tapas. The regions close proximity to Portugal and virtual isolation from the rest of Spain has had a marked influence on the style of wines from Galicia with many of them being closer in style to Portuguese wines. After a relaxing time at the Parador, the bus will take us back to Vigo and the yacht.

Santiago De Compostela - Pilgrim's Goal

We depart the port of Vigo for the one hour drive by motorway to Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important places in the world for Christian pilgrimage. This pilgrimage site became a symbol of the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is described by UNESCO as one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. Our first stop will be in Obradoiro Square where we visit the marvelous 15th century hotel of the Catholic Kings, built during the reign of Isabella and Ferdinand. Originally a hospital for pilgrims, the building is now a spectacular hotel, with a blend of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque styles gracing its rich and inviting interior. Later we cross the square to view the High Altar of the town's enormous cathedral. Our guide will show us the Jubilee Door where pardons are dispensed. The Portico de Gloria dates back to 1188, and is considered a cornerstone of medieval sculpture. After our tour of the cathedral we head back to the hotel to gather in the courtyard for cocktails. Here, we will be treated to a special dance demonstration by a typical Galician performance group and we will be able to sample local specialties. We will have some free time to do a little shopping, before returning to Vigo.
