Your first stop will be at the old flourmill called Casa da Farinha and learn about native trees, including rubber trees, and how latex is extracted to make many useful products. Next, your drive proceeds to the Santarem Zoofit. The zoofit project is an important step in the development of eco-tourism in this country, which is seen by many, as one of the best ways for Brazil to generate much- needed tourism income without damaging the forest. The beach resort of Alter do Chao sits on the Tapajos River and is tucked into a bay flanked by two hills. One of the hills, resembling the shape of a church altar, gives the place its name. Giving the town its beauty are the white-sand beaches of the bay and the deep blue waters of the Tapajos River. The beaches feature rows of simple stalls that sell fried fish and cold beer. As refreshing as a cool beverage is a dip in the inviting waters or a rest under a leafy palm tree, both of which visitors find themselves enjoying during their leisurely town exploration.

The capital of the State of Amazonas, the belle U‰poque splendor of Manaus is still evident in the graceful mansions and the Teatro Amazonas opera house. This city, resting on the Rio Negro, was created by the rubber boom of the mid-19th century, when steam navigation opened up the Amazon to entrepreneurs and the social elite. Today, stroll down the Parisian-styled boulevards and Italian piazzas, or watch the fishermen at Municipal Market unload their catch of the day on the rivers' edge. Many of the finest buildings in Manaus were constructed during the rubber boom, including the impressive Opera House. In addition, there are a few good museums, some fine restaurants featuring regional dishes, and a chance to purchase some locally made Indian crafts.
Guided by a skilled professional who qualified at the military CIGS (Centre for Intensive Guerrilla War in Rainforest), this adventure takes you on a walk with a difference... Boarding a regional riverboat, you will cruise for approximately 45 minutes upstream on the Rio Negro to reach Guedes Lake. Here you disembark at the local wooden pier, and after a talk about the rainforest you starts your jungle trail. Your well-trained guide will now lead you through the jungle for a close-up look at the wonderful surroundings. During your walk, there will be several stops where the guide will explain survival techniques such as how to construct a shelter or find a climbing plant containing drinking water. Following our jungle trek, you will reboard your boat for the return journey to the floating pier in Manaus.
Notes This is a strenuous tour with a substantial amount of walking involved (approximately 1.5 hour), and around 45 wooden steps to climb, therefore participating passengers should be in good health. We recommend wearing light trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, comfortable walking shoes or boots. Binoculars may add to your enjoyment and a camera will capture those magic moments. Due to the unpredictable nature of wildlife, we are unable to guarantee sightings of any creature, although with luck you may see monkeys and exotic birds. The trek is more an opportunity to learn about jungle survival. Depending on the number of participants, speedboats rather than riverboats may be used in the transfer to and from the start of the jungle trail. Complimentary bottled water and regional fruits are supplied. PRICE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Following your onboard breakfast today, your air conditioned vehicle and knowledgeable local guide will be standing by at the pier to take you on an exploration of Amazonia's "golden era" of the rubber boom. With the invention of the automobile in the late 19th century, the rubber boom began. As demand for rubber soared, small river towns like Manaus were transformed overnight into bustling centers of commerce. The city became the opulent heart of the rubber trade. Within a few short years Manaus had Brazil's first telephone system, 16 miles of streetcar tracks, and an electric grid for a city of a million, though it had a population of only 40,000. Individuals made vast fortunes and "flaunting wealth" became sport Rubber barons' lit cigars with $100 bank notes and slaked the thirst of their horses with silver buckets of chilled French champagne. Begin by crossing the 450-foot-long floating ramp that connects the dock to the street. This remarkable installation was designed by a Scottish engineer to cope with the annual rise and fall of the river, which can be as much as 40 feet. Close by you see the large yellow Customs building, constructed with materials brought as ballast from Europe. You also see the Municipal Market, whose wrought ironwork, designed by Gustave Eiffel, was imported from Europe. The Market is today under restoration and soon visitors will be able again to browse alongside the locals and purchase anything from medicinal herbs to arts and crafts. Continue your panoramic drive with a quickly stop for external view to the Rio Negro Palace, the former home of a prosperous rubber baron. Following a photo stop of the Palace, continue on to floating pier at Tropical Hotel where your regional riverboat will be on hand for the approx 20 minutes crossing the Rio Negro to visit the Rubber Scenario and Museum. A short walk through the forest will introduce you to a variety of native trees, including rubber trees and a short demonstration shows you how latex are extracted. Following a visit, your riverboat returns to the hotel pier were you would board your bus for a drive to the Bufalo restaurant, a unique venue where tender barbecued meats and fish from the huge grills are accompanied by salads in the traditional all you can eat style meal. Following lunch, continue on your tour with the 15-minute drive to the Sao SebastiU£o Square. Here, a visit will be made to Manaus' magnificent Opera House, completed in 1896 during the great rubber boom following 17 years of construction. The wrought iron skeleton of the building was brought from Scotland and the stone from Italy. The Teatro Amazonas, as it is officially called, was rebuilt in 1929 and has undergone restoration in past years. Today, it can be seen once again in its original glory. Leaving the Opera House, your will have free time at the square and opportunity to take photos of the former houses of the prosperous rubber barons. Next your memorable day in Manaus will conclude with a drive to the port and to your SeaDream II.
