Port Name Description
Venice Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic.
Hvar Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The island of Hvar is unusual in the area for having a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm summers with many hours of sunshine.
Dubrovnik Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva county.
Kotor Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains dominant among the architectural influences. The Bay of Kotor one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea, is sometimes called the southern-most fjord in Europe (though it is actually a submerged river canyon). With the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovcen one of the great Mediterranean landscapes is created.
Sarande (Butrint) This attractively situated port and seaside town lies in the very south of Albania, close to the border with Greece. The Greek island of Corfu can be clearly seen across the channel. The town is built back from a small beach with a pleasant palm-fringed esplanade. Located close by are not one, but two different UNESCO World Heritage sites! The first is the ancient city of Butrint which is now a national park where the remains of 3,000 years of occupation are piled on top of one another. The other site is the town of Gjirokastra, where the old town is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town.
Hydra There is one main town on Hydra, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, beautiful port and waterfront unspoiled by motorized vehicles. The island offers a rugged charm and some spectacular scenes, and makes the perfect place for some self-exploration.
Itea (Delphi)
Athens (Piraeus) Athens the capital and largest city of Greece, dominates the Attica periphery; as one of the world's oldest cities, its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery.

Athens – By Private Air Conditioned Mercedes Or Van

Would you like to follow your own ideas in Athens? In this case we would like to recommend the use of an air- conditioned car or van with your own driver.
Professional English speaking guides are also available at an additional cost (the drivers do not speak English).

These cars seat up to three passengers (without a guide and two passengers with a guide) and they are an enjoyable way to explore Athens at your own pace and allow you can create your very own itinerary. For van's see information below. The city of Athens and its surroundings offer you many interesting sites to choose from. To name a few:
  • The Acropolis, naturally! Don't be tourist, race up the hill to visit the Parthenon and leave. Take the time to explore the entire lower section at the foot of the Acropolis as well. Linger in the surroundings of the hill and visit the Theatre of Herodes and the Theatre of Dionysus among other sites. It is worth your while and makes for a much more rewarding experience (allow no less than 90 minutes for a relaxing visit). Note: The small museum on top of the Acropolis is currently (2007) closed for renovation.
  • A nice stop for photos of the Acropolis can be had from the nearby Pnyx Hill; this stop only takes a few minutes but the pictures will last forever.
  • Once you have completed your visit of the Acropolis and surrounding area, a nice walk can be enjoyed if you exit the grounds of the Acropolis via the north entrance near the Stoa of Attalos, the Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds. From there it is an enjoyable walk through the Old Athens (Plaka district) past Antique and souvenir stores as well as galleries, ending up at the city center and Syntagma Square where you can also find the Parliament building and the Grand Bretagne Hotels. Take your time during this walk; it can be done in a quick 45 minutes. But we are sure that you will want to linger so allow at least twice as much time; and once you are off the Acropolis hill, the entire rest of the walk is on mostly flat surfaces, unless you select to walk up some of the slopes in the Plaka.
  • Mount Lycabettus for amazing views of the city
  • "THE" famous National Archaeological Museum (how much time do you have? You can spend days in there). The museum is looking better than ever having been renovated for the 2004 Olympics.
  • The Benaki Museum (varied and interesting, 60 minutes or more). The outdoor rooftop restaurant is popular with locals.
  • The Museum of Cycladic Art, small but worth a visit (about 30-45 minutes). The small courtyard is a nice place to take a coffee break.
  • The Lalaounis Jewelry Museum in Acropolis area
  • "If you wish to explore the outskirts of the city as well, the drive along the coast to Cape Sounion is highly recommended. The setting of the Temple of Poseidon and the views across the Aegean Sea are spectacular.
NOTE: All of the above sites and museums are open on Sunday!
  • Should your visit fall on a Sunday, you may wish to stroll through the "Flea Market" in the Plaka district. There you will also find many shops, catering to visitors, open even on a Sunday.
  • For lunch the choices are many. We would like to recommend restaurants with a local flavor such as one of the many restaurants located at Microlimano the charming fishing harbour half way between Piraeus and Athens. Or, one of the tavernas in the Plaka district of Athens.
  • If you are planning dinner in Athens, our favorite is the rooftop restaurant at the beautiful Grand Bretagne Hotel in the centre of Athens (early reservations are essential). The night views of the Acropolis are simply stunning and the food is delicious; for a romantic dinner, it is hard to beat. The restaurant is also open for lunch (from 1:00 PM) but in our view, it can get a bit warm up there during the day.
Another rooftop option is the Galaxy Restaurant at the Hilton Hotel (dinner only from 7:30 PM). Additional lunch and dinner options.... Horizontes Restaurant at Lycabettus hill (lunch & dinner, opens at 12:30 PM) Dionysos Restaurant opposite the Acropolis (lunch & dinner, opens at 12:00 noon). Always a favorite with visitors and locals alike. Ithaki & Kastellorizo Restaurants in the Vouliagmeni / Varkiza suburbs of Athens on the coastal road (lunch & dinner open at 12:00 noon). A good choice for fish dishes and good views of the Aegean Sea. Seafood Restaurants in the Microlimano area ("Zephyros," "Jimmy & The Fish") lunch & dinner open at 12:00 noon. This area is one of our favorite settings in the charming fishing harbour about half way between Athens and Piraeus. Lots of local restaurant choices can be found by walking through the Plaka area at the foot of the Acropolis. NOTE: The prices shown require you to remain within the city limits of Piraeus and Athens; but including Cape Sounion. No entrance fees or meals are included which are at your own expense. The prices shown are PER CAR for up to 3 guests. If you select to hire a local professional guide, we recommend no more than 2 guests per vehicle. VIA PRE-BOOKED MERCEDES E-CLASS "TAXI" 4 hours - $349 per car, up to 3 guests 8 hours - $579 Each extra hour: $88 VIA PRE-BOOKED MERCEDES S-CLASS BLACK LIMOUSINE 4 hours - $469 per car, up to 3 guests 8 hours - $819 Each extra hour: $109 ATHENS " BY PRIVATE AIR CONDITIONED VAN Are you traveling with a small group of family and/or friends? Would you like to follow your own ideas in Athens? In this case we would like to recommend the use of an air-conditioned van. 4 hours - $479 per VAN, up to 17 guests 8 hours - $699 Each extra hour: $109 The prices shown are PER VAN for up to 17 guests though 10 is the most comfortable number of occupants. Hotels And Pre And Post Options

SeaDream's View: Once the private residence of a wealthy expatriate Greek, the Hotel Grande Bretagne is an architectural landmark and the historic Grande dame of the city. It was recently lavishly restored and converted to a palace hotel. We at SeaDream think it is one of Europe's finest hotels. We absolutely love its convenient location - the best in Athens, and within walking distance from the fashionable Kolonaki Square with exclusive shopping, entertainment, restaurants and cafes. Also within walking distance are important museums and the historic and picturesque old quarter of Plaka with taverns, open-air coffee shops, flea market and souvenir shops. The hotel offers 321 rooms but we recommend at least a deluxe room or one of the only 22 Junior Suites; so book early and ask for one that offers splendid views of the Acropolis, Parliament and National Gardens. We also enjoy the outdoor roof top pool and highly recommend dinner in the GB Roof Garden Restaurant. Why? You'll never forget the view, the delicious food and the mix of local and international guests that fill the restaurant nightly. Reserve early and enjoy. Don't forget to visit their web site for more information and photos. Walking The Walled Town

This guided walk through the walled town is an excellent opportunity to not only get to know your way around for later independent explorations but your knowledge and experienced guide will provide you with a historic insight and context to let you appreciate this beautiful town to its fullest. As you arrive at the walled city of Dubrovnik via SeaDream tender and enter its fortress walls through the Harbor Gate, gaze up at the ever-watchful St. Blaise, the patron saint of the city. Once inside, you are sure to notice immediately the absence of signage and neon, its stone-paved Stradun Avenue lined with graceful stone palazzos, shops, sidewalk cafes and government buildings all looking as they did hundreds of years ago. Along the way we visit, among other places the Maritime Museum with a special emphasis on the glorious period of seamanship under Dubrovnik Republic in the 16th century, the Rector's Palace (15th century) once the seat of the Government and Rector in the, once, independent Republic of Dubrovnik (abolished by Napoleon in 1808). Today it gives us a taste of how the ruling class and the aristocracy used to live. Other fine buildings will be viewed from the outside: the Sponza Palace notable for its column courtyard with elaborate stone carvings, Church of Saint Blaise, Onofriou`s Fountain, etc. A knowledgeable guide brings the rich history of this visually stunning city alive! The main shrine of the monastery is the tomb of St. Lucas, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches, the church of Theotokos and the Catholic Church which is the oldest in the complex tentatively dated to 1011-1012.

Arachova is a mountain small town and its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos, with 3300 inhabitants, 800 – 1100m (2600-3610 feet) altitude. In 2000 B.C. Homer mentioned in the Iliad two famous generals who took part in the Trojan War Epistrophos and Schedias from the old towns of Anemoria and Kiparissos. These old towns were situated around where Arachova stands today. Later, in about 334 B.C. Philip the 2nd king of Macedonia destroyed both towns and their populations dispersed over the hills until over the year’s one new town, Arachova, was built. Today the 'jewel' of Parnassos Arachova remains vital because it keeps its' traditions alive and the residents remain simple and hospitable. From the first moment you will feel a different wind blowing up here, and understand why the locals work so hard to keep up the areas' natural beauty! You'll see how the food is prepared by visiting the smoke house where the ham is made and small houses where women make the famous Njegusi cheese. Following this relaxing and interesting break, proceed to Cetinje, the former capital of Montenegro. Being a part of the Lovcen National Park, this town was formerly the seat of the bishops of Montenegro who ruled the country from Cetinje. Continue your scenic drive through the mountains to Budva, a 2,500-year-old coastal town, for a photo stop before returning to Kotor and your SeaDream yacht.

Sarande (Butrint)

Gjirokastra - Unique Ottoman Jewel

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gjirokastra is situated in an historic landscape unchanged in centuries and framed by snow-capped mountains, about one hour drive from Sarande. The old city is famous for its hundreds of Ottoman-style tower houses with distinctive stone roofs, wooden balconies and whitewashed stone walls. Dominated by a vast castle, the second largest in the Balkans, Gjirokastra is a magical city with a rich past. From feudal stronghold to Ottoman jewel , the city was an intellectual center and has inspired many poets, authors and artists. Our guided tour will take us around the network of cobbled streets that climb steeply out of the bazaar taking us back in time. A visit to the Medieval Castle will expose us to stories of medieval rulers and communist atrocities alike. The commanding situation of the castle (guarding one of the main North-South routes of the Balkans) indicates that it must have been since prehistoric times the site of a fort or fortress. Crusaders passed by, looting, raping and pillaging, in the 11th century. One gruesome legend recounts that when the Ottomans invaded in the 14th century Princess Argyro jumped from the highest tower of the castle with her very young son, to escape capture by the Turks. Lunch will be served in a spectacular garden location in the center of the old town with great views of the castle. Our next stop will be at the Ethnographic Museum., which was the former home of the Communist Dictator Enver Hoxha. The old Ottoman houses do not have balconies, but they are richly endowed with well-proportioned windows. Many have elegant verandas. We will see how the old families used to live in the town as we visit the Zekate and Angonati tower houses. We will take with us back to the port many impressions of this unique historical city.

World Heritage Site Of Butrint

The easily-defended site of Butrint has made it a magnet for occupation for at least the last 3,000 years. The result is a kaleidoscope of civilisations, all built on top of one another; Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian. Our tour will start with a panoramic drive from the port of Sarande through rural Albanian countryside, giving beautiful views of the Park from the South-East side of Lake Butrint.. Along the way, the guide will give us an introduction to local history and the culture of Albania. According to one of the many legends of the first settlement of Butrint, in the 12th century B.C., Helenus, son of King Priam of Troy, after the fall of his city, sailed west to establish a new settlement. On his journey he landed in the island of Corfu and decided to sacrifice a bull to Apollo. The wounded bull escaped and swam across to the mainland. Helenus followed by ship and, taking this event at an auspicious sign from Apollo, built there a smaller version of Troy, giving to it the name Voutrotos, which means in the ancient Greek language "the wounded bull". Inhabited since prehistoric times, the area of Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city, a Byzantine port and has fallen under the influence of the Normans, Venetians and Ottomans. Following a period of prosperity under the Byzantines, then a brief domination by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a collection of ruins representing each period in the city's development. The excavations in Butrint started before Second World War. An Italian archaeological group headed by Luigi Ugolini made their excavations in the period 1928-1939. More recently, the Albanian Institute of Archaeology has undertaken the excavations with the assistance of the Butrint Foundation founded by the English Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury in 1993. The site has been certified as a UNESCO World Heritage. At the site, our guided walking tour will take us through the city of Butrint where we can admire monuments of many different civilizations. This will lead us up to the Acropolis overlooking the site and a short visit will be paid to the Museum, refurbished and reopened in 2005. Refreshments will be served, before we re-board the coaches for our drive back to the port.

Notes This tour requires walking over uneven surfaces and cobblestones. Wear comfortable shoes and take a hat. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. All adventures and prices in the SeaDream Yachting Land Adventures program are subject to change. Final tour details will be announced onboard.

Romantic Gondola Evening Serenade

Since Venice began there have always been gondoliers. By the 11th century most were in private service with patrician families. There were about 10,000 gondoliers in Venice in the 16th century, and today there are fewer than 400. Great skill is required to steer a boat through the narrow canals of Venice. Each gondola is 36 feet long, 4 feet wide and weighs 1,100 pounds. A gondolier serves a 10-year apprenticeship under a padrone before getting his own permit. A licensee must be native-born, and, since new licenses are not issued, must wait until a colleague gives up a license before getting his own. Their union offers free courses in foreign languages, art history and the history of Venice, but the gondoliers are not given singing lessons - every Italian seems to have a natural talent for song. Join us for a romantic tour through the canals of Venice. Riding four per gondola, you will traverse the smaller, less trafficked canals, enjoying the soft lights and balconied waterfront homes, and be serenaded as you glide along.
