MARSTRAND TOWN AND CARLSTEN FORTRESS
Sweden's west coast is her sunshine coast and has become the most popular holiday region in the country. The area is dotted with picturesque fishing villages, inlets and idyllic coastal resorts. On foot we will tour the small medieval town, dominated by the 17th century Carlstens Fortress. Marstrand has a very special, turn of the century character, its white wooden houses decoratively carved and its cobbled streets smoothed by centuries of foot traffic. Marstrand is a sailing town par excellence and the harbour throngs with boats of all sizes, shapes and colours. After our stroll through the town there is a rather steep 200 yard walk up to the Carlstens Fortress. For more than 300 years has this huge grey guardian protected the little wooden town below. It used to be associated with war, imprisonment and fear. Today we only think of it as a place of fantastic parties and banquets. Take also the opportunity to enjoy the amazing view from the top of the hill. The guided walk at the fortress is conducted by a special fortress guide, dressed in a uniform as it looked when the fortress was still in the fortress business.
