OSLO HIGHLIGHTS (and secrets)
Our tour will cover both well-known and little-known unique highlights of this city on the fjord of 600,000 inhabitants. Holmenkollen Ski Jump: The Holmenkollen ski jump was rebuilt for the 2011 World Championships and is the most modern ski jumping arena in the world. The best jumpers fly almost 500 feet to land at the bottom of the hill. Try to imagine how brave(or crazy) you would have to be to participate in this sport ! Holmenkollen hill also offers a spectacular view of the Oslofjord and parts of the city. Vigeland Sculpture Park: This unique park covers 80 acres and features 212 bronze and granite sculptures. In the space of thirty years the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland created - on commission from the city of Oslo - his own world of sculpture. Centrally placed is the monolith with 121 naked human bodies fighting their way upwards. Viking Ship House: The museum out on the peaceful Bygdoy peninsula houses authentic Viking ships that were excavated from burial mounds from the Viking age. The well-preserved vessels serve as an excellent example of the Viking Period's ship-building craftsmanship. The Gokstad ship is a typical seagoing ship, while the Oseberg ship from about 800AD is richly adorned and was probably used for ceremonial.purposes. In addition there is a collection of household implements found during the excavations of the ships, which took place during the last part of the 19th century. Emanuel Vigeland Museum: An exclusive visit. Emanuel Vigeland Museum at Slemdal is one of Oslo's best kept secrets. The museum's main attraction is a barrel-vaulted room, completely covered with fresco paintings. The 800 sq.m. fresco Vita depicts human life from conception till death, in dramatic and often explicitly erotic scenes.. Emanuel Vigeland (1875-1948), Gustav Vigeland's younger brother, erected the building in 1926, intended as a future museum for his sculptures and paintings. He eventually decided that the museum should also serve as a mausoleum. All the windows were closed and his ashes were put to rest in an urn above the entrance door. After a brief drive past other city highlights, the tour ends at the pier.
