TREKKING ON THE BODAL GLACIER
An exciting adventure for the adventurous and physically fit among us ! The Bodal Glacier is an arm of the mighty ice fields of the Jostedals Glacier - the largest glacier in mainland Europe. We drive from the pier along the fjord past the village of Loen and then inland along the Lovatnet Lake. The scenery is magnificent and among other high- points we can see the ill-reputed Ravnefjellet (Ravens Mountain). Twice during this century there have been rockslides causing tidal waves that have destroyed many of the farms along the lake. Arriving at Bodal Valley we start preparing for the trek on the ice. We are fitted out with the equipment for the trek i.e. helmets, boots equipped with spikes, ropes, etc. The walk to the foot of the glacier takes approx. 45 minutes. By the foot of the glacier the trekking guide await us. They have a first class national certificate in glacier trekking and you have now approx 1 hour on the glacier to look forward to. After this unique experience we shall enjoy lunch picnic style outdoors, before we return via the same route down to Bodal Valley where we board the awaiting coach to bring us back to the pier in Olden.
Notes: Preferably bring along your own mountain boots! With the safety of the passengers in mind, the Glacier Guide can cancel the walk on the glacier if the ice is judged to be unsafe. This an activity tour that can be strenuous at times and pax should therefore be in good physical shape to participate. The trekking guide can deny participation to guests that are considered unfit. There is a minimum age to participate of 14 years. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity.
