HIGHLIGHTS OF CARRIACOU
Mini vans are at the ready this morning for an opportunity to explore the northern region of this spirited tropical isle. The first stop is Belair, about 600 above sea level, offering some spectacular views, with the main town of Hillsborough in the foreground, crescent shaped Sandy Island glistening off shore and Grenada's towering mountains to the far south. The vista from Belair also takes in the languid chain of Grenadine Islands, including Petite Martinique. Belair is also noted for its windmills, a great house, agricultural nature center, rain forest and tropical wildlife and the only hospital on the island, which has an interesting story. On then to windward, home of traditional boat building introduced by the Scottish over 200 years ago. There are few places on earth today where boats are crafted in this age-old style. This scenic drive continues to the Botanical Gardens for a glimpse of the lovely tropical flora before proceeding to a small museum that houses relics of Carriacou's past history. This pleasant drive is a relaxed and informal overview of the island.
