NAUTICAL MARIEHAMN - YOU BE THE CAPTAIN
Mariehamn is the small capital city of the Aaland Islands, a group of about 6,500 islands scattered in the Baltic Sea. The ocean is all around and the islands naturally developed a rich maritime tradition. Mariehamn was the base for the last large sailing ship fleet in the world which transported Australian wheat to Europe until after World War Two. Many inhabitants still become seafarers and the Aaland University trains students in marine navigation using a life-size simulator of a ship's bridge. You will have the opportunity to stand on the bridge and navigate the ship into the harbour of Mariehamn! Bring your captain's hat. We can also climb the tower of the university building for a fantastic view over the archipelago. Proceeding into the city, we will visit the Salt Culture Center, a handicraft house which is run by several local designers. The workshop includes textile , silver, ceramic, wood and iron goods made here by one of the designers who is probably standing behind the counter. Transfer back to the yacht or continue your day in Mariehamn if time permitting.
