About the challenge

This 100k route from London to Brighton is unique and exclusive to Blind Veterans UK and we have tried to make it as off-road and scenic as possible to make the walk enjoyable for our participants. The itinerary

The route follows The Wandle Trail out of South West London and down through Surrey and Sussex, finishing at our centre in Ovingdean, Brighton. Hearty meals, drinks and snacks are provided at rest stops along the route and our events team will offer full support with training and fundraising to reach the various fundraising targets.

Your epic journey will begin on Saturday 6th June 2015 at Hammersmith and Fulham Rugby Club in Putney, South West London. A staggered start from 10am will see you on your way, in anticipation of the adventure lying ahead. Following a briefing from the event's organisers, a member from Blind Veterans UK will talk about how much the money they have raised will help to support other members such as themselves.

You will leave the busy city behind you and head south, along the banks of the Thames and start to head in to more rural surroundings. You will then march along the Wandle Trail which is popular which walkers and cyclists alike. There are plenty of semi-rural parklands as well as the Carshalton Ponds and Wilderness Island. After stopping at Oaks Park for the first refreshment stop, walkers make their way in to the North Downs and head towards Godstone. It is a lot more rural around here and walkers follow the public footpaths and the pretty village green. The walk takes you through the night, in the Sussex countryside down to Plumpton which takes you through the South Downs and an opportunity to take in some beautiful scenery. The sea comes into view as you approach the finish line at the Blind Veterans UK centre in Ovingdean. There will of course be a big welcome at the finish line for all walkers!

For those of you taking on the 50k route, your start point will be at Imberhorne School from approx. 10pm, and you will then pick up the same route to Brighton.

We also have a dedicated microsite and Facebook group, offer full medical and logistical support and you will receive a specially designed 100k t-shirt to wear with pride. One of our previous participants  said, “It was the greatest personal achievement of my life. For those not sure about this year…Get involved!”.

Detailed information

What's Included?

The price includes experienced Discover Adventure leaders and support staff throughout to manage the event safely and enjoyably, marshalling stops with water, food and snacks.

What's Excluded?

We are not including personal insurance (optional), any parking fees or transport costs, or accommodation if required. Approx. £50 is recommended for personal expenses and we strongly recommend you carry a credit card in case of personal emergency.

Trekking Information

Groups will set off at staggered intervals but you can go at your own pace - this is not a competitive event! If we are concerned about you being able to finish the distance safely, we may shuttle you to a forward check point.

Terrain

We trek mainly on grass or gravel paths but there are some small tarmac roads and at least one main road crossing. Some sections may be muddy. There are many hills of varying length and gradient, and little true flat terrain. The environment we walk through needs the respect of all its users to be preserved. Please walk on the path surface rather than on the vegetation growing beside it, don’t remove stones from the paths and don’t take short-cuts. Please follow the Countryside Code.

Weather

Be prepared for any weather! This may only be a one-day event, but you still need appropriate, good quality footwear and clothing to cope with the weather conditions and the length of walk.

Preparing for the challenge

Clothing & Equipment

We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, as well as details on useful discounts you are entitled to as a Discover Adventure customer. We are always available if you need advice. Each person should bring a small daypack to carry lunch, camera, waterproofs, sun cream, a warm fleece and any other items needed during the day.

Training

This is a long and tough one-day challenge and it is consequently vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. The more training that you do the more you will enjoy the experience!

It is an endurance event, designed to be very challenging for those of good health and fitness. It is achievable for most people provided they train far enough in advance to gain the fitness and experience required – and have a healthy dose of self-belief and determination.

Trip Safety

Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with radios and emergency mobile phones, medical kit and other safety apparatus where necessary. They always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. Our leaders are responsible for safety on the trip, and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary should local conditions dictate.  Pre-trip administration – such as compulsory medical questionnaires – is all done with your safety in mind.

Worldwide Sustainable Tourism

Long before Responsible or Sustainable Tourism became a recognised phrase, we designed and ran our trips to ensure they made minimum impact on the environment and a positive impact on the local communities we pass through.

Discover Adventure Projects

We are supporting a tree-planting project in Peru and a children’s home in Tanzania on a long-term basis. If you would like to ‘give something back’ please consider donating £5 to our projects when you sign up.

Carbon Offsetting

We encourage all our customers to offset emissions connected with their trip. You can offset at any time in the lead-up to departure by visiting Climate Care via our website and making a donation to a worthwhile project supported by them. Alternatively, if you wish to take more practical action in the UK you can volunteer for a day with The Conversation Volunteers and work on an environmental project local to you. Work may include construction footpaths, dry stone walling, creating wildlife habitats or planting trees in your community. Volunteer today at www.tcv.org.uk or call 01302 388883.
